On April 20, 2021, NNEGC Energoatom and JSC Turboatom signed a contract to manufacture and supply a turbine condenser for Zaporizhzhya NPP unit 1. Under the terms of the agreement, Turboatom will manufacture and supply a modular condenser to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. The contract value is UAH 525.8 million.

Manufacturing and shipment of condenser equipment for ZNPP unit 1 are scheduled to be completed by the end of May 2022. The payback period will be about 8,5 years.

Acting president of NNEGC Energoatom Petro Kotin stressed: «This is a crucial event for the Company. Since August 2019, Energoatom has been confidently implementing the equipment modernization program of 15 power units of four Ukrainian NPPs designed for five years. New condensers are already in operation at three ZNPP units (№№ 2, 3, 4). The manufacturing of the condenser for power unit 5 is coming to an end. For 2023, such works are scheduled at ZNPP unit 6.»

JSC Turboatom General Director Victor Subotin, in turn, said that this was an important contract for machine engineers, given that it meant ordering for  half a billion hryvnias and loading the company with work for more than a year. «I am very grateful to Energoatom for the trust», he added.

SS «Atomkomplekt» General Director Oleh Doroshenko pointed out: «The significance of this agreement can hardly be overestimated. Condenser replacement works will have both an economic effect through additional electricity generation, and a technical one, namely increasing the reliability of power units operation».

Replacement of condensers at power units of Ukrainian NPPs will increase the electric power of turbine equipment by at least 15 MW. Therefore, the next scheduled works are expected at Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.

«The need to replace the condenser is determined by the refusal to use copper-bearing alloys in the secondary coolant circuit in order to increase the reliability and safety of steam generators,» explains Serhiy Muradkhanov, ZNPP Deputy Chief Nuclear Power Plants Specialist (on Turbine Equipment Reconstruction). «Replacing the condenser will increase its efficiency.»
