Energoatom can extend the service life of most Ukrainian power units up to 60 years
The service life of most power units of Ukrainian nuclear power plants can be extended from 30 to 60 years. This was stated by the head of SE NNEGC Energoatom Petro Kotin during a press conference in the Ukrainian News media outlet.
According to him, the 30-year design life of 12 out of 15 Ukrainian power units has already expired. Every 10 years, Energoatom conducts a safety reassessment of each power unit and equipment life.
«Now we believe that our power units will operate for at least 50 years. That is, we currently have about 20 years for the power units to keep operating,» explained Petro Kotin. «However, following this period, through the safety period analysis, we will take a decision on whether it is possible to operate each power unit for another 10 years.»
According to him, the future of Ukrainian power units after 60 years of operation will be determined assuming whether it is more appropriate to construct new nuclear power units.
