A regular meeting of the Command Centre on implementation of modernized Westinghouse nuclear fuel (RWFA) at power units of Ukrainian NPPs took place at Zaporizhzhya NPP. The meeting was attended by the representative team of Westinghouse Electric (Asia) S.A. led by the President and CEO Jose Emeterio Gutierrez, as well as the representatives the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU), Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, SE NNEGC Energoatom, and State Scientific and Technical Centre for  Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS). Also in the attendance were representatives of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Parliament of Ukraine).

The President of NNEGC Energoatom Yuriy Nedashkovskiy opened the meeting by welcoming participants and stressing on the importance of the event that was intended to attain the strategic objectives of the Company and the nuclear power sector of Ukraine at large.

“Works are well under way and on schedule. All issues, addressed in the previous resolutions by the Command Centre and provided for in the Work Program on implementation of modernized Westinghouse nuclear fuel, have been settled in the regular course of work. We are pleased to note that cooperation between SE NNEGC Energoatom and Westinghouse continues expanding in the area of diversification of nuclear fuel supplies as well as under the safety improvement program,” - said Yuriy Nedashkovskiy.

Introducing the Secretary of the Parliamentary Committee for Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy and Nuclear Safety, the People’s Deputy of Ukraine (member of the Ukrainian Parliament) Victoria Voytsytskaya, the President of NNEGC Energoatom commended her for her contribution to the adoption of bills, which were extremely important for nuclear power sector, that have been recently reviewed during the meeting of the Conciliation Board with participation of the leaders of parliamentary fractions and Chairs of the Verkhovna Rada’s Committees and have been submitted for further review by the session.

The President of Westinghouse Electric Company Jose Emeterio Gutierrez thanked the President of NNEGC Energoatom Yuriy Nedashkovskiy for the opportunity to visit Zaporizhzhya NPP. He mentioned that the Westinghouse Company and Ukraine started their cooperation more than 20 years ago. “We worked hard to establish a successful cooperation and we are very much interested in success of SE NNEGC Energoatom because the success of Westinghouse also directly depends on the success of NNEGC Energoatom. Ukraine made a strategic decision in due time to diversify the nuclear fuel supplies. This has not only opened a window of new opportunities for Westinghouse but also become a particular honour for Westinghouse to supply nuclear fuel to the Operator of Ukrainian NPPs. Westinghouse will spare no efforts to provide NNEGC Energoatom with the top quality products and services”, - stressed Jose Emeterio Guttierez.

As a reminder, in June 2016  the  core of Unit 5 of Zaporizhzhya NPP was loaded with  Westinghouse nuclear fuel manufactured in Sweden.  Therefore, the unit switched to the mixed core, with 25 % of the Westinghouse design fuel and 75 % of the Russian design fuel. In June 2017 the core of Unit 5 of ZNPP was reloaded with Westinghouse fuel. As a result, the core contains 50 % of Westinghouse and 50% of Russian fuel.

In September-October 2017 the cores of Units1, 3 and 4 of Zaporizhzhya NPP were loaded with Westinghouse fuel and those units switched to the mixed core containing 25% of Westinghouse design fuel and  75% of the Russian design fuel.

In 2018 Unit 5 will have 75 % of Westinghouse fuel and 25 % Russian fuel, the cores of  Units 1 and 3 will have fifty-fifty mix of  the Westinghouse and Russian fuel. The next fuel reload of Unit 4 with Westinghouse fuel will be in 2019 due to the lifetime extension activities in place.

It is assumed that in 2019-2021 the cores of Units 1, 3, 4 and 5 of Zaporizhzhya NPP  will  be fully composed of Westinghouse fuel.
