President of Energoatom meets with the representatives US Nuclear Power Industry

President of SE NNEGC “Energoatom” Yurii Nedashkovskyi had a meeting with the representatives of relevant US Government Agencies, Scientific Organizations and Nuclear Power Industry enterprises. From the American side, in particular, the representatives of Westinghouse Electric, Holtec International, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, NAC International, NuScale Power, EXCEL Services Corporation, X-energy took part in the meeting, as well as the representatives of Argonne National Laboratory and US Nuclear Energy Institute. The meeting took place on September 17 within the participation of the Energoatom’s delegation in the 63rd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) being held on September 16-19 in Vienna.

During the meeting, moderated by Nazak Nikakhtar, Assistant Secretary for Industry and Analysis US Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, the participants discussed the ways to expand cooperation between Ukraine and the United States in the area of diversification of nuclear fuel supply sources, spent nuclear fuel management and lifetime extension of Ukrainian NPPs.  

Also on September 17, Mykola Kukharchuk, Director for International Cooperation of Energoatom, and Katherina Deufrains, Program Management Officer for Ukraine in the IAEA Department of Technical Cooperation, discussed the Program of technical cooperation between Energoatom and IAEA for 2020-2021. Energoatom initiated the national project UKR2018003 “Improvement of Operational Safety at Ukrainian NPPs”. The main goal of the project is to improve operational safety of Ukrainian NPPs through IAEA International Expert Missions. Among the project activities the expert mission on the operational safety review (OSART) and mission follow-up at Zaporizhzhya NPP and expert mission on the safety assessment of long term operation (SALTO) at South-Ukraine NPP power unit 3 are planned. The goal of the project is also the improvement of existing at Ukrainian NPPs operational experience data bases using the best international practice, training of Ukrainian NPPs personnel in the world-wide existing methods for assessing significant risks for low level events and their potential impact on safety.

In addition to the UKR2018003 project, a project to support Ukrainian institutions and organizations in the field of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management, as well as nuclear facilities decommissioning and radioecological monitoring has been included to the Program of Technical Cooperation between Ukraine and IAEA for 2020-2021.

On September 17 the representatives of Energoatom took part in the Forum of NPP Operators dedicated to the formation of sustainable management of the supply system in the nuclear power industry.
